Ballinrobe man releasing book about five decades of Mayo football
Thanks to David Rischke of The Mayo News for taking the time to chat with me about my new book, I Can See It Still: Across the Landscape of Mayo Football.
We covered plenty of ground, from my earliest memories of following Mayo in the 1970s to my years as a journalist, broadcaster and communications manager with the Mayo senior football team, and eventually back to being a supporter again.
Mayo’s All-Ireland victory this year was, of course, the catalyst for the book. As I explained to David, it gave us a chance to look back on all those years with a different perspective. The disappointments, near misses and great days along the way have taken on a new meaning.
We also spoke about some of the people and stories that feature in the book, the idea of ‘New Time’ that runs through it, and the title itself, borrowed from The Saw Doctors.
Writing 77,000 words was quite an undertaking, but I’m very glad I did it. The circumstances that have prevailed in Mayo since July 26 are something we’ll never experience in quite the same way again.
