A Busy Month for Books in Mayo
October is going to be a busy month for books in Mayo.
I was thrilled to be asked to contribute to Those Who Listen: New Irish Writing on the Bog, edited by Alice Kinsella and published by Mayo Books Press. It will be launched during the wonderfulk Wild Atlantic Words Festival in Castlebar next Wednesday, 7 October, at 7pm. My short story Thirty-four Sods is included in the collection.
Great credit to Alice for bringing the collection together, and to Mayo Books Press for publishing it. Unfortunately, work takes me away next week, so I won’t get to as much of Wild Atlantic Words as I would have liked.
Not surprisingly, there will be plenty happening on the Mayo football front at the festival too.
John Gunnigan launches Keeping the Faith, his account of six decades following Mayo, while Anthony Hennigan and Edwin McGreal launch Never Stop Dreaming, with photographs by Michael McLaughlin and Inpho, telling the story of Mayo’s All-Ireland glory.
I know something about the amount of work that goes into getting a book to this point, so I wish John, Anthony, Edwin and everyone involved with both books very well.
And, as it happens, I have another reason for watching the calendar.
On Friday, 16 October at 7.45pm, I’ll launch I Can See It Still: Mayo football all those years. And then 2026 at An Sportlann, the home of Castlebar Mitchels at MacHale Park, Castlebar. All are welcome.
