Liam Horan has observed Mayo football from an unusually wide range of perspectives over more than five decades.
As well as being a lifelong supporter, he has been a player of, at best, average ability, a local and national journalist, club officer, chair of the committee that produced the controversial Mayo GAA Strategic Plan, and communications manager to the Mayo senior football team under two different managements.
These roles have brought him into dressing rooms, committee rooms, press boxes and terraces, while always remaining rooted in his own club, Ballinrobe.

This book draws on those experiences, but it is not an official history – it is a personal account of a county and its football as he remembers and experienced it.
The book sees the day of light in the warm afterglow of Mayo’s historic 2026 success, but, like Mayo itself, was many years in the making up until that famous day.
This is Liam Horan’s third book – the previous two were Second Chance & Other Stories (Mayo Books Press, 2022) and On The Way Out (Savoy Editions, 2025). On The Way Out won the Gerald Griffin Competition for First Original Adult Fiction 2025.
